The One With The US Elections

Well, this is a recipe for disaster.

So I guess on one hand, it's some sort of a victory for America. They finally got their first black president in the White House. Sorry, couldn't help the pun. Politically-incorrect, I know, sue me. They got over racial boundaries; they elected a man who is of African descent and whose name is Barack Obama to not only represent America in the world, but to literally be the most powerful man in the world. So I guess that's points in their favour; if you like.

But here's the downside. Look at his campaign; he squeezed the racial card for all it's worth (never mind the fact that he's half-white on his mother's side, but seeing as being white doesn't get you votes, he squeezed the colour card nonetheless). He is a minority representative and his campaign was 99% backed up by African-American supporters. All the African American people in the states with even the little bit of colour supported Obama. Why? Because he was a potential president with good prospects? No. because he was black; most importantly, because he was a member of a minority group; because he was one of them. they did not support him because he demonstrated skill and experience in being a good leader, but because he was a minority member who obtained great power and it is human nature to latch onto that power in hopes to get a taste of it too. So he was backed up by his array of rap singers, black actors, Winfry and co., etc. Good for him. If he demonstrated anything throughout his campaign it was not his quality as a leader, but rather lack thereof. He acts before he thinks, he is opportunistic and manipulative and most importantly – he is a celebrity, a movie star. He is all of those things, but he not, in any way, even remotely qualified to enact as the most powerful man in the world.

His opponent was McCain. Not the brightest star in heaven, I suppose. And to make things worse, his potential vice-president has proven herself to be an idiot. But I guess his greatest downside is that the American people knew he would simply continue the Bush administration and frankly, they just want to get their kids out of Iraq as they've had enough in the past eight years. So they've finally got brains; they saw their chance to fix a mistake they'd already done twice by electing someone else. It just so happened that the alternative was Barack Obama.

So now they have it. We all have it. Minorities got what they wanted; the African-American community in the States celebrates his victory; no surprise there. But in a few days, or weeks, or even months they are going to wake up and realize it is not about Dr King's Dream. It is one thing to use your colour to win elections; in today's world that's easy. But when it's time to implement his presidency skills, it won't matter whether he's white, or black, or blue or purple. The race issue is going to die out and when it does, Americans will find a man who has lost his most powerful card and who turned out to have nothing else to offer. They are going to find that the most powerful leader in the world is an incompetent, inexperienced, talk-a-lot-but-do-little regular guy with absolutely nothing to give. He cannot lead America, let alone the rest of the world, out of the crisis it is in now, and he most certainly can't lead them into a better future, or at least a stable future, and no fortune from Oprah Winfry, Kanye West or whoever the hell else that paid for his campaign will be able to save him then, or the States, or the rest of us.

Not to say that McCain would be much better, and I already gave a few reasons why, but at least that guy knew what he was doing... in some sense. As my boyfriend suggested, Obama might be just the lessser of two evils, but to be honest, I'm not so sure. It'd be a little bleak to say we'd have been doomed either way. I guess time will tell.

So congratulations, America. We're fucked.
